# AI Doesn’t Bookmark Your Store. It Re-Picks Every Week.

An [SEO researcher](https://seofomo.co/posts/this-week-s-top-seo-ai-search-news-seofomo-may-3-2026) counted something this week that I keep turning over: when AI tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI answer a customer’s question, they don’t use the same sources two weeks in a row. ChatGPT swaps out roughly three of every four sources every single week. Google’s AI swaps out about half.

In plain words: AI doesn’t bookmark anyone — it re-picks every time someone asks.

That changes the math on owning a website.

Until recently, a store’s website was a brochure. Build it once, point your customers to it, fix the hours when they change. Job done. AI search has quietly turned the website into something different — a place that has to keep moving in order to keep being seen. The shop in Knoxville that gets cited by ChatGPT when a daughter-in-law searches for “thoughtful Mother’s Day gift in East Tennessee” isn’t the shop with the prettiest homepage. It’s the shop whose website did something this week.

A new product page, a question answered on the FAQ, a write-up of an event you hosted, a fresh line on a brand page — small, frequent, the kind of thing AI notices.

If your store’s website is wired into your inventory system — the kind of setup where a new product gets photographed, written up, and goes live as its own page when it arrives — you’re already doing this without thinking about it. Every product that goes live is a new page on your site: a new URL, a new description, a new photo. Your website is moving every time you receive a shipment.

AI doesn’t bookmark your store. Every week, it picks again — and it picks the websites that moved.

## What AI Search Means for Your Store

Most independent shop owners don’t have time to update a website every week. You’re managing a sales floor, making sure everyone on your team showed up when you needed them, helping the customer who wants to chat more than shop, calling reps, changing the paper in the credit card terminal, and remembering which customer’s anniversary is coming up Friday. A weekly content sweep is not happening, and pretending otherwise isn’t respectful.

The shops showing up in AI search anyway are the shops who have someone — a daughter, an employee with marketing instincts, a paid hand — adding small things to their website on a regular cadence. The someone doesn’t have to be a website expert. They just have to be consistent.

This is part of why, behind the scenes, I’ve been quietly building per-retailer pages for the shops I work most closely with — starting with the ones who book me an appointment at market. Pages that get updated when their brands launch new things, when there’s something to say about a season, when the algorithms shift again. Not a brochure but a working surface.

These pages go to retailers who place their orders with me — the lines I rep, ordered through me, every season. That’s the door. Free shipping on someone else’s order saves you money once. A page that keeps your store visible to AI keeps working all year. You decide what that’s worth.

If your website is sitting there exactly the way it sat in October, it’s not just static — it’s quietly going invisible. The simplest thing you can do this week: pick one page and add three sentences to it — a new product, a new event, a fresh line about your store. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be something AI can notice.

Movement is what visibility looks like now — and it doesn’t have to be loud, just regular.
