# You Don’t Have to Be Excited About AI

I’ve noticed something over the last few months. When I bring up AI in conversation — even casually — most people kind of… shut down. Their eyes glaze. They change the subject. They mention that their nephew uses it for homework. Then they’re done.

For a long time I thought the issue was that they didn’t understand. Or were scared. Or were skeptical of the hype. None of those felt quite right.

What I think is actually happening: they’re out of room.

If you run a small business, every hour of every day is already accounted for. Payroll. Tariffs. A piece of inventory missing. A customer who hasn’t paid. A staff member who didn’t show up. The endless math of is this month going to be okay. There is no oxygen left for and also let me reconsider what a computer can do.

The brain protects itself. Not today. Not this.

That’s not a flaw. That’s survival.

The people who DO have bandwidth for AI right now are mostly bored, semi-retired, or unusually well-supported. None of those describe most indie store owners I know. Most of you are running hard.

So if you’ve felt guilty for not “getting into AI” — stop. Your full plate is the explanation. There’s nothing to feel behind about.

My job, as I see it, is to keep one eye on what’s coming, sort out what actually matters, and bring you the parts you can use. You don’t need to chase the news. I bring the news to you.

That’s why these Tidbits exist. They’re the version of “staying current” that doesn’t require you to stay current.

Take Tuesday slow. Pour the coffee. Open the store.
