## Why True South works at retail

True South was started, in founder Susan Taylor’s own words, “looking for more interesting images and trying to protect mom-and-pop bricks-and-mortar stores.” The category had been overrun by bulk producers who weren’t paying attention to imagery, and Susan built True South as the alternative, independent woman-owned, Nashville-based, and explicitly designed to live in the kind of independent retail her shoppers were trying to support.

The line works best when a store gives shoppers enough variety to find themselves in the art. State puzzles, National Parks, Appalachian Trail, Nashville, pet humor, seasonal designs, and 100-piece minis all serve a different gift moment without making the category hard to shop. Every puzzle is commissioned from an independent artist and packed with buried Easter eggs, on city designs, the postmark is the actual founding date of the city; on state designs, the puzzle is numbered by the state’s order in the Union.
