After graduation they did the expected things — continued education, climbed the ladder — and realized they missed each other. They wanted a different life. A more intentional one. In 2010, they started making soap by hand in Lincolnton, North Carolina, a small town northwest of Charlotte. Sixteen years later, they’re still there, still handcrafting every product with a tiny team. Three years in, everything changed. In October 2013, Julia and Wayne were doing back-to-back craft shows — Saturday in Alexandria, Virginia, Sunday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They drove through the night in Bubbles, their soap van, caught a few hours of sleep, and set up just in time. It was hot. Julia was having trouble walking. Her legs felt like she was moving through quicksand. She kept slipping away to nearby restaurants, leaving Wayne alone under the tent. She woke up the next morning with no feeling in her left leg. By mid-October, Julia was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis — an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the protective coating around the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Every person’s MS is different. The cause is unknown. There is no cure. Julia manages daily neuropathic pain, muscle cramping, and crushing fatigue. She gets an infusion every three months to slow the damage. In her own words: “The other 99% of the time, we make a point to set MS aside, so we can focus on the life we want to live — not the life it is choosing for us.” That mindset shaped every product in the line.
