# Visa Just Made Chargebacks More Expensive for Every Store That Takes Credit Cards

On April 1, Visa’s new VAMP threshold kicked in — dropping from 2.2% to 1.5%. That’s the maximum ratio of chargebacks and fraud disputes to total transactions before penalties hit. If you’re over that line, Visa charges $8 per disputed transaction, plus higher reserve requirements and potential account termination. This affects every merchant in the US, Canada, and the EU who processes card-not-present transactions — which now includes most retailers who sell online, take phone orders, or run any kind of e-commerce.

## What This Means for Your Store

A 1.5% ratio sounds generous until you do the math. If you process 500 card transactions a month and 8 of them get disputed, you’re already at 1.6% — over the line. And Visa counts fraud alerts and disputes, so one bad transaction can ding you twice. Here’s the one thing to do this week: call your payment processor and ask for your current chargeback ratio. If they can’t give you that number easily, that’s a problem worth knowing about now — not after the penalties start.

## One More Thing

If you use Shopify, Square, or any platform that handles disputes for you — don’t assume you’re covered. The VAMP ratio is calculated at the acquirer level, but merchants who push the numbers up are the ones who get flagged. Your platform won’t absorb the $8-per-transaction penalty for you.
