# What Mother’s Day Shoppers Are Asking ChatGPT This Year

This is my first Mother’s Day as a grandmother. I think it’s also the first Mother’s Day where people are typing gift ideas for mom into [ChatGPT](https://openai.com/).

That’s the news this morning. OpenAI quietly made GPT-5.5 the new free default. Anyone who opens ChatGPT today gets a smarter model — without asking, without paying, without even knowing it happened. The customer who wanders into your shop Saturday afternoon with her eyes glued to her phone may not have come from Google. She came from a chat.

Here’s the thing: AI doesn’t browse. It pulls from text it can read. If your Mother’s Day collection page reads like a SKU dump — “Item 4421: Necklace, silver, 16 in.” — the AI skips it. If it reads like a person describing the piece — “thin silver chain, sits just below the collarbone, made by a jeweler in East Tennessee” — the AI quotes you.

Your competition isn’t the shop down the street anymore. It’s whether the AI bothered to mention you.

This weekend, the customer asking AI “where can I find this for my mom” is reading someone’s product description. Make sure it’s yours.

❤️ AmyFay

This morning’s Friday Retail Tidbits is live.

A different topic, same spirit — this week I unpacked the five “landlords” quietly renting parts of your store you didn’t realize you were renting. Your customer list, your photos, your AI visibility. One fix per landlord.

Before I became a rep, I built two T-shirt lines, ran my own retail business, bought home and gift for Elder’s Ace Hardware, and worked with Werner Frank. I have been the maker, buyer, retailer, rep, and person at the register, so I evaluate every line from the store floor first.

I write the Morning Retail Tidbit and [Friday Retail Tidbits](https://amyfaychandler.com/category/friday-retail-tidbits/) to help local retailers buy smarter, merchandise with intention, and keep their stores valuable.

Something quietly tilted in favor of small shops this month. A study looked at 16,851 questions people asked ChatGPT and tracked which webpages got cited in the answers. The big finding: pages with headlines that directly answer the question were cited 41% of the time. Pages with headlines that were just kind of related were…

### What You Lose When the Algorithm Changes

A line jumped out at me over the weekend, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since: “The leaders renting their memory from someone else’s app will lose their institutional knowledge the moment they close the tab.” That isn’t a tech sentence. That’s a retail sentence. Every store has a memory. The customer names you’ve…

The NYT just quoted words a politician never said — an AI hallucination. Three checks every retailer should run on AI-written copy before publishing.
