# The Cheapest Line in Your Store Might Cost the Most

A cheaper AI tool landed this week, priced well under the top one — and the people who run these tools all day noticed something funny. [Simon Willison](https://simonwillison.net/2026/Jun/30/claude-sonnet-5/) pointed out that even though it costs less per use, it can cost more to finish the actual job, because it takes more tries to get there. Cheaper per unit, pricier per outcome. That’s just the true cost of a thing wearing a disguise — and every store owner already knows this one.

You’ve lived it on your own floor. The $6 impulse piece that looked like a steal at market, then needed a markdown to move, jammed up every restock, and came back to the counter twice.

Its price tag said cheap. Its true cost — the markdown, the labor to reset it, the shelf space it held hostage from something that would have sold — said the opposite. Meanwhile the line you almost passed on because it cost more sold clean, reordered itself, and never once made you sigh.

The lowest price tag and the lowest cost are almost never the same line.

So before the next market, do the unglamorous math on your slowest “cheap” line: add up the markdowns, the staff minutes, the prime shelf space it occupies. Set that number beside a proven winner at twice the sticker. Then buy the outcome, not the tag.

The cheapest thing in your store is rarely the one with the lowest price. It’s the one that quietly costs you the most to keep.

An SEO researcher counted something this week that I keep turning over: when AI tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI answer a customer’s question, they don’t use the same sources two weeks in a row. ChatGPT swaps out roughly three of every four sources every single week. Google’s AI swaps out about half. In plain…
