# Walmart Just Blocked AI Shoppers (Good News for You)

Big tech has been building little digital errand-runners they call AI agents. The pitch: tell the robot “I need new towels,” and it goes to a website, picks them, and buys them for you. No clicking, no scrolling, no decisions. This week, Walmart blocked them from checkout. Amazon and Shopify did the same.

Here’s why. When a robot does the picking, the store loses the visit. They can’t show a customer something new. They can’t put a candle next to the soap. They can’t tempt anyone toward the better gift. The store stops being a store and becomes a vending machine.

The big-box websites are finally admitting what indie shops have always known: shopping isn’t just buying. Shopping is looking, touching, smelling the candle, picking up the journal, asking the person behind the counter, “Do you have something for a teacher who’s retiring?”

A robot can buy paper towels. It cannot help a customer find the right baby shower gift. It cannot say, “That woman comes in every Friday — she would love this.” It cannot wrap the gift in tissue paper while she waits.

Don’t try to compete on vending-machine speed. You’ll lose every time. Compete on the thing the robots cannot do — knowing the customer, knowing the gift, knowing why someone walked in today instead of yesterday. The biggest stores in the country just spent millions of dollars proving that’s the only thing left worth being.

An SEO researcher counted something this week that I keep turning over: when AI tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI answer a customer’s question, they don’t use the same sources two weeks in a row. ChatGPT swaps out roughly three of every four sources every single week. Google’s AI swaps out about half. In plain…
