AI Search Doesn’t Care How Big Your Website Is

Something quietly tilted in favor of small shops this month. A study looked at 16,851 questions people asked ChatGPT and tracked which webpages got cited in the answers. The big finding: pages with headlines that directly answer the question were cited 41% of the time. Pages with headlines that were just kind of related were cited 29% of the time.

That is a 12-point difference. And the bigger point — domain authority, the score that has decided who wins SEO for fifteen years, did not predict citations at all. A small shop with the right headlines beat a big chain with the wrong ones, every single time.

Here is what that means for your website. “About Smith’s Gifts” loses to “What does Smith’s Gifts sell?” Your FAQ page beats your homepage. Generic-sounding questions answered specifically beat clever marketing copy. The big retailers spent millions building domain authority. AI search just decided not to count it.

One more thing. Google now requires content to be visible to humans the moment the page loads. If you have FAQ items hidden behind “click to expand” or content that only appears after scrolling, AI cannot see it. Make it visible. Make the answer the first sentence under the question.

The action this morning is small. Rewrite five questions on your FAQ page. Use the exact questions a customer would type into Google or ChatGPT. Put the answer in the first sentence. No lead-in. No marketing voice. Just question, answer, done.

For once, the math actually favors the small shop.
