What Mother’s Day Shoppers Are Asking ChatGPT This Year
This is my first Mother’s Day as a grandmother. I think it’s also the first Mother’s Day where people are typing gift ideas for mom into ChatGPT.
That’s the news this morning. OpenAI quietly made GPT-5.5 the new free default. Anyone who opens ChatGPT today gets a smarter model — without asking, without paying, without even knowing it happened. The customer who wanders into your shop Saturday afternoon with her eyes glued to her phone may not have come from Google. She came from a chat.
Here’s the thing: AI doesn’t browse. It pulls from text it can read. If your Mother’s Day collection page reads like a SKU dump — “Item 4421: Necklace, silver, 16 in.” — the AI skips it. If it reads like a person describing the piece — “thin silver chain, sits just below the collarbone, made by a jeweler in East Tennessee” — the AI quotes you.
Your competition isn’t the shop down the street anymore. It’s whether the AI bothered to mention you.
This weekend, the customer asking AI “where can I find this for my mom” is reading someone’s product description. Make sure it’s yours.

This morning’s Friday Retail Tidbits is live.
A different topic, same spirit — this week I unpacked the five “landlords” quietly renting parts of your store you didn’t realize you were renting. Your customer list, your photos, your AI visibility. One fix per landlord.
