We Made Too Much

“We made too much.”

— Lululemon

One of your retail colleagues in Tennessee is distressed about a large amount of jewelry she has in stock that has completely stopped selling. She emailed with me this week to see if I had any ideas about what to do.

She has had it on sale for a few weeks – at times deeply discounted. Hardly anyone has touched it.

It’s not a Tango vendor. Let’s just get that out of the way. 😊

There are about a bazillion ways to do sales. I know you can think of several immediately. But after we had emailed this week, I happened to read something about Lululemon.

“Sale” is not in their vocabulary; rather, “We made too much,” is.

Why? Because consumers appreciate the truth.

We all know logically if it’s on sale it’s probably because not enough people bought it at full price.

A simple change in wording changes our perception.
“Oh – they made too much.”

I know – lol – but it’s just human psychology.

Most items in your store are not made by you. You are a retail partner with manufacturers. “We made too much” doesn’t work.

But “We bought too much” might. Of what else can you think that would be truthful without using “SALE?”

Another tactic is timing. Unless you are planning to donate what you don’t sell after markdowns, don’t keep things on sale. Make “specials” special.

Some of you are completely slammed and wonder what is going on.
Some of you are not busy and wonder what is going on.

It’s an election year. It’s always different.
If you are slow, it will pick up.
If you are busy – congrats and take your vitamins.

Either way – I am here to help you however I can. Love working with you – but you know that! 😍

xoxo,
❤️ AmyFay
