What Your Store’s Square Footage Says About Inventory — Weekly Retail Tidbits #240

It’s not luck. It’s Open to Buy! 🍀
I have a complicated relationship with packing a suitcase.
I’ve gotten better over the years. I actually have a list on my phone now, which is more than I could say a decade ago. And honestly, doing it so many times has taught me a lot. But “better” and “consistent” aren’t the same thing. When I forget to check the list, one of two things happens:
I forget something I actually needed.
Or I overpack and can’t find what I need once I get there.
Sound familiar? 😄
The forgotten item is the bane of every trip. You get there and realize your favorite shoes, your phone charger, that one thing just isn’t there. That’s your best seller being out of stock. The one your customers come in looking for, and you have to say “I’m so sorry, I’m waiting on a shipment.” Ouch.
But overpacking has its own cost. When everything is stuffed and nothing has a real place, you spend twice as long digging through the chaos to find what you actually need. An overpacked store does the same thing to your customers. When there’s too much, nothing stands out. The things that should be selling get lost in the shuffle.
What your square footage is trying to tell you
Your store has a number. Not just a vibe, not just a feeling — an actual number that reflects how much inventory it can hold effectively. A good rule of thumb is $100-$150 in inventory value per square foot for a general gift store. So a 1,000 square foot shop should carry roughly $100,000-$150,000 in inventory at retail or about half that at cost.
But here’s where it gets interesting: what you sell changes everything.
A jewelry case can hold thousands of dollars of product in just a few square feet. High value, small footprint — your OTB for that category can be proportionally higher. Furniture? One piece might eat 40 square feet and take months to turn. Your OTB there needs to be tighter.
Every product has to earn its space. Just like every item in my suitcase. 😄
What to do with this
- Know your square footage
- Calculate your target inventory range
- Look at your categories — what’s high value and fast turning? What’s slow and space-heavy?
- Buy accordingly
The retailers I see with the healthiest stores aren’t necessarily the ones with the most product. They’re the ones who know their number — and shop to it.
A better system, followed consistently, changes everything. I’m working on mine. I know you are always working on yours. Hoping this helps!
I do love to hear from y’all. If you enjoy these each week, thank you for telling me. Also, if you have subjects you would like me to cover – I love knowing that, too.

Technology Tip
Try this:
Type your store’s square footage into an AI tool and ask it to help you figure out your ideal inventory investment by category.
Something like:
“I have a 1,200 square foot gift store. I sell general gifts, jewelry, and some home décor. Help me think through how much inventory I should carry in each category.”
It won’t know your store perfectly — but it will ask you the right questions. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
Note: This tip is being formally changed to Technology from AI each week. Hopefully that will be more relatable. AI is technology. Technology is more familiar and therefore, less scary.
Question: Do you want more in depth technology tips, or are these about right for your comfort/skill level?

True South Puzzles
In thinking about square footage and inventory investments this week, puzzles are an awesome example as they take up almost no floor space relative to the sales they bring.
A small section can hold 20+ SKUs. Puzzles TURN — 30-day reorder cadence is standard for my True South retail partners. That’s your Open to Buy working hard in a small space.
Susan (TS owner) has two brand new designs shipping in May:
- Tennessee Welcomes You
- 30A Florida’s Scenic Hwy
With summer travel season coming, that 30A one is going to FLY for your customers headed to the beach. 🏖️
Both are 750-piece, created by artist Jennifer Savage and made in the USA.
If you’re doing the math on your square footage like we talked about last week, puzzles are a category that punches way above its weight. 🧩
More new coming! You’ll see them in JUNE at market!
EvaBelle
Quick merchandising tip on EvaBelle: don’t spread these all over the store. I know they’re pretty, but when you scatter them 1 here and 2 there, they get lost. Order 3 to 4 per SKU minimum and GROUP them — one main display where a customer walks up and says, “Here are my choices.” You can pull a few out for a vignette, but the anchor grouping comes first.
With Easter coming, these are moving especially fast. Stay stocked.
It takes at least 2 weeks to ship after your order is placed.
Small footprint. Big sales. Beautiful!!
The Winding Road
When you’re thinking about your sales per square foot (and you should be), The Winding Road is the kind of line that earns its space. Handbags hang beautifully on a wall or sit on a table and practically sell themselves.
Felt items tuck into seasonal displays without eating up floor space.
2 categories, 2 price points, both punching above their weight in sales per square foot.
Handbags are shipping!
If you ordered at market, handbags are on their way to you – yay! Many of you have been asking. I’m thrilled to say they made it across the water, and Marla’s team is getting them out the door!
On the felt side, now is the time for spring and Easter. Think felt bunnies, felt eggs, and those gorgeous garlands — handmade in Nepal at the best prices with the best quality.
A little Easter basket display with The Winding Road felt items takes up maybe 2 square feet and gives your customer something only found shopping locally.
a tidbit more
One of you called me worried this week – my calculator page was down for 24 hours – so sorry! It’s all good again. I built them just for you!
FYI – Gold prices are way UP. Meghan (Meghan Browne Style) is experiencing much higher prices for her 18K collection. Best sellers will stay but at a higher price point for what we hope is a temporary time. She will simply sell out of some things (at still great price points) and not reorder. Stock what you can now.
