My parents started the annual tradition of a 1 week family vacation years ago when there were a lot fewer of us. (I am the eldest of 5.)

As our family grew, some of us started playing (family friendly) poker together after we tucked our babies in for the night. The guys in our family hang out longer if they have something to do. We girls can just sit and chat. lol.

As you can imagine, we know a lot about how we all play.

For example, one of my brothers-in-law will play almost every hand. He is the most competitive person I know. My sister-in-law is more conservative. I love it when she wins. I love it when I beat my brother.

My husband enjoys the psychology of the game. He comes up with one-liners like “scared money never wins” at just the right moment. You know – the person who had the winning hand was too scared to bet it so a worse hand won.

I overheard a conversation between 2 retailers with stores in different parts of Tennessee discussing a line they both buy. One was complaining it wasn’t selling and the other was saying how incredibly well it sells.

I know the stores. I know the displays. Can you guess which store bet big and confidently and which one looks scared to be in the hand – I mean business?

Retail is like a poker game.
You’ll win more with confidence.

Remember – inventory is the least scary investment you make. You can usually get your money back with a 50% off sale. Fixed expenses are different.
